Ballenger Takes Advantage of Second Chance

HARTFORD, S.D. — Dusty Ballenger appeared to be headed for a respectable third place finish as the field of Hard Core Speed Shop IMCA 360 Sprint Cars wheeled the final lap at I-90 Speedway Saturday night. Even after Danny Lee’s spin brought out the caution to serve up a green/white/checker finish, most fans were debating between Micah Schliemann and Dylan Peterson as to who the eventual winner would be. Schliemann had years of experience on his side, but Peterson appeared to have a faster car after running Schliemann down more than once as they moved through dense slower traffic.
When the green flag dropped, Peterson tried to drag race Schliemann and take the inside groove away in turn one. As the two battled, Ballenger, who restarted third, flew by coming out of turn two to lead the last two laps for the win. Schliemann had been the leader since his pass of Dustin Beenken on the fourth lap. Ballenger came from the sixth row for his first I-90 Speedway win this season.
Craig Hanisch’s Express Copy and Printing Late Model Street Stock victory was similarly exciting. Hanisch also came from the sixth row and led the last two laps after passing early race leaders Don Bickett and Dale Furby.
Tyler Johnson cruised to his first USRA B-Modified win after getting by Jeremiah Christensen on the seventh lap. Christensen’s second place finish was also his best of the season. Kenny Scholten gained 11 positions to finish third.
Travis Schreurs is back on track after being disqualified on opening night. Jason Mehlhaff led the first five laps before giving way to Schreurs. Schreurs’ third Hobby Stock feature win puts the defending track champion at the top of the point standings with Zach Olivier trailing by 10-points.
Keith Johnson dusted the field to win his second Fast Auto Wash Super Chargers feature this year.
