Mike Young Grabs First I-90 Speedway Win

HARTFORD, SD — It was not a good night to be leading Saturday’s Hard Core Speed Shop IMCA 360 Sprint Car feature unless your name was Mike Young. Terry Chester led the first six laps before having to bow out due to a plug wire that came loose. That gave the lead to Young who led the next eight laps until John Lambertz passed him as the two approached a slower car. However, Lambertz lost a left-side wheel and entered into a flip on the next lap which took him out of the race. Young again took the lead and outraced the rest of the field to the checkered flag for his first career win at I-90 Speedway.
Young said, “This is a new car. We got it a couple of weeks ago and we’re really getting it dialed in.”
Cory Yeigh came out on top in a three way slugfest with Dale Furby and Craig Hanisch in the Express Copy and Printing Late Model Street Stock feature. At one point the drivers were three wide at the flagstand for the lead. Meanwhile, Jesse Akkerman was the Performance One hard charger, marching to a fourth place finish. Akkerman will carry a 40-point lead over Eric Moser into championship night on September 10th.
The USRA B-Modified A-Main was another thriller. Kenny Scholten took advantage of a green/white/checker finish to squeek by Tracy Johnson and earn his fifth win of the season. Johnson had led eight laps prior to the final caution flag. Fans also saw several drivers come from the back of the field. Most notable was Mark DeBoer who gained 12 positions to finish seventh in a car he just purchased from Ryan Ruter. Vermillion, South Dakota, driver Karl Brewer picked up 11 positions to finish fifth in his first I-90 Speedway start this year.
Zach Olivier held off Travis Schreurs over the last few laps of the Hobby Stock feature for his second win. Olivier took over the lead from Dereck Vanderbrink on the sixth lap. Schreurs missed out on a second place finish though as he was disqualified for an illegal rear end. Still, Schreurs has a 76-point lead over Olivier going into the final night of the season.
Keith Johnson found himself a ringer in Rick Egan as a provisional driver. Egan, the 2004 Hornet champion at I-90 Speedway, raced Johnson’s car to an easy win in the Fast Auto Wash Super Chargers main event. Egan has nearly as many wins as Johnson at the Hartford track with 18.
Division champions will be crowned next Saturday night. Hot laps begin at 6:30pm.
