Jacobsma and Schlumbohm Win Wild I-90 Speedway Openers

 

 

   HARTFORD, SD — Justin Jacobsma appeared to have lost the lead and the win in Saturday night’s Hard Core Speed Shop 360 Sprint Car feature at I-90 Speedway with just two laps remaining before he eventually came out on top in a race-long battle with Jordan Martens.  Martens, who lost the lead to Jacobsma at the half-way mark, exchanged passes with Jacobsma on the 19th lap of the 20-lap A-Main.  The two also dueled with Brock Dump in an exciting finale even though the track had become rough during the evening’s features.  All three drivers led at least four laps with Jacobsma leading 12 including the last 11.  The win was the first at I-90 Speedway for the Hull, Iowa, driver.

   Just as exciting was the season’s first USRA B-Modified feature which saw Devon Schlumbohm pass defending track champion Tracy Johnson on the final lap to earn his first career I-90 Speedway win.  Johnson had led for 10-laps before Schlumbohm clicked off a perfect final lap.  “Any time you can race beside Tracy it’s a blast,” said Schlumbohm whose car once belonged to 2010 track champion Cody Ahrendt.  Johnson gained the lead from Mark DeBoer on the fifth lap when the former late model driver bowed to mechanical problems.  The fifth lap restart was highlighted by several lead changes.  Johnson passed Schlumbohm who passed Brock Hess who passed Jared Nytroe.  Nytroe had been running second to DeBoer at the time of DeBoer’s caution.

   Ater a one-year absence from I-90 Speedway, veteran racer Gary Brown, Jr., took advantage of his front row starting position and led all 15-laps of the Express Copy and Printing Late Model Street Stock A-Main.  Craig Hanisch had moved from ninth to second when the race was stopped for debris on the frontstretch.  He was unable to catch the leader when the race went green.

   Tim Waltner began his Hobby Stock season in fine fashion as he lead all but one lap of the feature.  Waltner gunned it past Jeremy Van Ede on the second lap en route to his 22nd career win at his home track.  Waltner came from the third row.

   For the second straight year, Laura Ebbesen won the opening night feature in the Fast Auto Wash Super Charger division.  Joe Blake led the first six laps of the 10-lapper before Ebbesen took over.

   Though making it cold and uncomfortable for the large number of fans that turned out on opening night, strong wind gusts helped dry the track which had been wet and muddy all week.
