LAST LAP PASS LANDS BICKETT BARSTAD WIN
by Steve Zwemke
HARTFORD, S.D. — Hard charging Ryan Bickett of Ramona, South Dakota, passed Kaley Gharst on the 25th lap of the 2nd Annual Barstad Memorial 360 Sprint Car race on Saturday night to earn a $1500 paycheck. Bickett had been gaining on Gharst in the third and fourth turns over the last several laps, but it was a slide job in turn two that sealed the win for Bickett. Gharst led the most laps (14) after inheriting the lead from Chuck Swenson who spun in turn four earlier in the feature. Brock Dump led the first six laps. Bickett started 12th and passed 11 cars to earn the Hard Charger award which earned him a free front wing from fellow driver Kevin Flowers, one of the race’s sponsors.
A huge crowd and a field of 42 Sprint Cars turned out to honor former racer and car owner Loren Barstad who had worked with drivers like Robby Wolfgang, Casey Heser, Clint Garner, Brooke Tatnell, Dusty Wasmund and many others.
Gary Brown Jr., found the dry slick race track to his liking as he came from 10th to win the Express Copy and Printing Late Model Street Stock feature. It was the second win in as many races for Brown, who led the last five laps after passing defending track champion Jesse Akkerman. Scott Borkowski and Dan Jensen also led early in the race.
A good battle between Mark DeBoer and Tim Dann highlighted the night’s USRA B-Modified feature. Dann had fallen to third late in the race when Mitch Van Engen took his turn at trying to overtake DeBoer. Dann stormed back for the win after a caution flag caused a restart with three laps to go.
It wasn’t the prettiest of nights in the Hobby Stock division. Caution flags far outnumbered laps by the time the race went green-white-checker. But the green-white-checker finished turned into an exciting shootout with Dustin Gulbrandson getting a good run off turn four on the final lap to pass Zach Olivier for the win. The two raced side-by-side for most of the last two laps.
Kelsey Hennings took advantage of some her competitors’ bad luck and raced to the win in the Fast Auto Wash Super Chargers division. Elmer Rolfes passed five cars to finish second.
