SCHREURS AND LAMBERTZ WIN SPRINT FEATURES AT I-90 SPEEDWAY
by Steve Zwemke
HARTFORD, S.D. — Troy Schreurs won his last feature at I-90 Speedway nearly six years ago – in a Super Charger. Saturday night, Schreurs put his name in the track’s records as a 360 Sprint Car Feature winner for the first time. Schreurs started on the pole but Randy Droescher, who started behind him the the second row, quickly jumped to the front. Before the first lap was complete, Schreurs made a bold move to the bottom of turn three, something never easily accomplished against Droescher, to retake the lead for good.
Always the racer, Schreurs said after his win, “I wish we would’ve been able to run more laps,” in talking about how the race was cut by 12 laps because the time limit had been exceeded. Dusty Ballenger and Ryan Bickett looked like possible challengers for the top spot before the race went green-white-checker after several attempts to restart the A-Main with 14 laps to go.
John Lamberz also found victory lane in the Hard Core Speed Shop 360 Sprint Car make-up feature which was rained out on May 19. Mike Young had a huge lead and looked to be untouchable before his motor quit on the 10th lap. Lambertz led the last 11 laps and also had a little luck on his side when Troy Schruers and Ryan Bickett left the race early to save their motors.
Dan Jensen and Cory Yeigh locked up in a fantastic battle for the Express Copy and Printing Late Model Street Stock win. Jensen nudged Brandon Ferguson out of the lead on the fourth lap while Cory Yeigh was making his way to the front from his fourth row starting position. Jensen and Yeigh both fought for the bottom lane and Yeigh did lead laps 9-10 before Jensen made the winning pass en route to leading the last five laps. Gary Brown, Jr., worked the slick track in gaining 10 positions for a second place finish, his second in as many races, to go along with two wins.
Tyler Johnson won the 6th Annual Pink My Ride race for USRA B-Modifieds. In another great feature, Johnson and Mark DeBoer took turns at the point. DeBoer led the first four laps and again on lap six. The track served the drivers well as they exchanged slide jobs until Johnson took the lead for good on the eighth circuit of the 15-lapper. Before the checkered flag, Jeremiah Christensen had found the bottom groove to his liking and went from 12th to second. Tracy Johnson made an inspired run from 10th to third. Brothers Tyler and Tracy Johnson spearheaded Pink My Ride as a tribute to their cousin, Cylie Pastian, who successfully battled cancer. Since it’s inception, Pink My Ride has generated nearly $100,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network and Sanford Children’s Hospital with all of the donations staying in the Sioux Falls, South Dakota, area.
Zach Olivier was close to perfect in his first Hobby Stock feature win of 2012. Olivier took the lead from Brad Hallem just two laps into the 12-lap main event. Olivier started in the fifth row while sixth row starter Travis Schreurs made it all the way to second at the finish.
The Fast Auto Wash Super Chargers A-Main started out with a scare as Keith Johnson barrel rolled his car in the second turn. Johnson, who was racing for the first time this season after “retiring” at the end of 2011, was okay. When the race went green again, Tyler Martin dominated the field to win his first I-90 Speedway feature. Martin was a provisional driver in point leader Laura Ebbesen’s number 14.
The 7th Annual Modified Madness is next Saturday night. Topless USRA B-Modifieds will highlight the Paramount Racing Series lineup.
