TYLER JOHNSON WINS THIRD STRAIGHT AT I-90 SPEEDWAY

   HARTFORD, S.D. — USRA B-Modified driver Tyler Johnson has had stretches over the past few racing seasons when he is just darned hard to beat.  Johnson seems to have found another one of those grooves as the Sioux Falls, South Dakota, racer strung together his third consecutive win in Saturday’s 7th Annual Modified Madness at I-90 Speedway.  Johnson started on the pole and led all 15 laps for a $500 win.  Many of the USRA B-Modified drivers raced topless for the second straight season, something that Johnson said the drivers had encouraged promoter Lyle Howey to incorporate into the annual Modified Madness night for “something a little different.”

   Though John Lambertz managed a nice lead through lapped traffic, he said that a caution flag with five laps remaining in the Hard Core Speed Shop 360 Sprint Car Feature came at a perfect time.  Lambertz continued to rule the bottom of the track when the race went green in leading all 20 laps to win his second feature.  “I just really like this race track.  I always have,” said Lambertz in victory lane.  Meanwhile, fifth row starters Dusty Ballenger and Ryan Bickett finished second and third respectively.  Lambertz came from the fourth row.

   Almost five years had passed since Dale Furby’s last win at I-90 Speedway when he raced in the Wissota Late Model division.  Furby fought with Cory Yeigh for the bottom lane and took it away on the fourth lap.  Yeigh tried to regain the lead several times before Furby took the checkered flag in the 15 leap feature.  Don Bickett also challenged the two for the lead before settling for third.

  “To finish first, first you must finish,” said Travis Schreurs after his fist Hobby Stock win of 2012.  Schreurs, the four-time defending track champion, led the final six laps of the feature which was cut by two laps due to time.  His post-race reference spoke to the attrition that took a good number of the starting lineup out of the field.  One who benefited was Zach Olivier.  Olivier finished second after starting 21st.  Deven Van Veldhuizen also had a good night.  He started 15th and finished third.

   For most of the season, Joe Blake has been fast enough to win on any night.  And, on any night, an assortment of mechanical problems was just as likely to send him home disappointed.  Blake ran problem-free on Saturday night in winning both his heat and the Fast Auto Wash Super Chargers A-Main, the first of his career at I-90 Speedway.  Points leader Laura Ebbesen was runner-up.

   Several members and friends of the Bickett family filled the stands as Don paid tribute to his parents and to the race fans who have been loyal over the years.  Bickett put one of the nice touches on the race night by giving some of his old racing trophies to I-90 Speedway’s Junior Fan Club winners.
