HARTFORD, S.D. — Jordan Boston of Lincoln, Nebraska, was a surprise winner of I-90 Speedway’s Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series special on Saturday night. Boston led all 30 laps to become the national series’ 12th different winner in 2012.
Boston won the second heat race which allowed him to finish in the top 8 in passing points. He then drew the pole position before the tremendous crowd during intermission.
Lee Grosz of Harwood, North Dakota, shared the front row with Boston but brought out the red flag on the opening lap when his car bounced into the third turn and flipped over.
Another red flag stopped the action just a couple laps later when Wayne Johnson of Knoxville, Iowa, had a brush with the frontstretch wall which resulted in his car flipping violently past the flagstand. Johnson was okay though falling further behind Jason Johnson in the ASCS point standings.
Boston was in full control of the race until a caution on lap 20 for Kaley Gharst bunched the field together. Jack Dover of Springfield, Nebraska, had moved up from the third row to challenge the leader and was gaining ground in lapped traffic but Boston managed the backmarkers well enough to hold off Dover and earn his first ever ASCS National Series win. Dover crossed in second while Oklahoma driver Brady Bacon gained six positions to finish third. There were 37 cars in the field.
In other action, Tracy Johnson picked up his second USRA B-Modified win. The race was delayed several times for cautions and then cut short when the time limit was breached. The checkered flag was displayed with the caution when a pair of drivers spun coming out of turn two. Johnson said, “I don’t know what the hell was going on behind me. I wanted to drive some more green flag laps.” Johnson took the lead from Tim Dann on the fourth lap. Johnson also took the points lead away from Dann. Johnson leads Dann by two points. Devon Schlumbohm was the race’s hard charger, taking advantage of some cautions and also getting by some strong cars at the front of the field. Schlumbohm finished second after starting 14th.
The Hobby Stocks provided plenty of excitement as packs of 4-7 cars fought for the lead on any given lap. Zach Olivier led the final five laps en route to his second win. “This thing worked like a million bucks,” said Olivier. “I made the last restart as good as I could and hit my marks,” he added. Don Brady Jr., and Derek Baartman also lead earlier in the 12 lap feature. Mike Chaney made several attempts to get around both Brady and Olivier but had to settle for second in what was an outstanding run following up his feature win from a week ago.
Joe Blake became a three-time Fast Auto Wash Super Chargers winner. Blake took the lead from Michael Pechous and never looked back. Both drivers led five laps. Blake also gained on points leader Laura Ebbesen. The difference is now just 15 points.
