HARTFORD, S.D. — Veteran Sioux Falls race car driver Craig Hanisch won a pair of features Saturday night at I-90 Speedway and, in doing so, set the speedway’s new record for career wins at 41. Hanisch’s Express Copy and Printing Late Model Street Stock victory broke a tie with Shawn Reed who holds nine track championships and won features in five different divisions, primarily in the 1990s.
Hanisch followed Gary Brown Jr., throughout most of the Street Stock A-Main as the two broke away from the rest of the pack. Hanisch took the lead on lap 13 when Brown’s right rear tire gave out. Humble in victory, Hanisch wanted little or nothing to do with the accolades that customarily accompany on-track achievements. Before thanking his family, Hanisch said, “This is just your local race track and the guys here are no better than anybody else.”
Hanisch had tied the I-90 Speedway career wins record just minutes before setting the new mark. Tyler Tesch led the first four laps of the USRA B-Modified feature before climbing the track in the first turn. The bobble allowed Hanisch to make the pass for the lead. Hanisch then led the final 11 laps with Tracy Johnson close behind.
A disqualification handed the Hard Core Speed Shop 360 Sprint Car win to Joe Riedel of Ramona, South Dakota. Riedel led the first 15 laps before Mike Young passed him in lapped traffic. However, Young was disqualified in post-race tech for having a titanium drive shaft. The win was Riedel’s first ever at I-90 Speedway. Johnn Cressman was strong in a second place finish. Justin Glaser was third while Ryan Bickett came from 14th to fourth. Bickett is now just 18 points behind Dusty Ballenger at the top of the point standings.
It had been a tough first half of the season for Mike Chaney to say the least. Chaney, the night’s Hobby Stock winner, had not finished better than eighth in a feature before Saturday. It was an impressive turnaround for Chaney who easily led all 12 laps. Nobody was able to challenge him on a couple of yellow flag restarts. Tim Waltner was the runner-up after starting eighth.
Harley Bauman, last season’s Fast Auto Wash Super Chargers track champion, hit the track for just her second race this season. It became her first win after she passed Michael Pechous on the fourth lap. Meanwhile, Joe Blake continued a great month of June with a second place finish. Blake has moved to within 32 points of division leader Laura Ebbesen.
