HARTFORD, S.D. — John Lambertz avoided a couple of early race incidents and then grabbed the lead on lap 10 when Troy Schreurs had to bail because of mechanical problems on the way to winning his third Hard Core Speed Shop 360 Sprint Car feature at I-90 Speedway. A red flag stopped the race on the second lap when Ryan Bickett’s car flipped in turns three and four. In front of him, Schreurs had tried to pass between Scott Van Mannen and Dave Ekern – it didn’t work. The resulting contact moved Schreurs’ nose wing askew but it didn’t seem to matter as Schreurs raced to the front of the field and led eight laps before exiting to the pits. Lambertz received a challenge from Dusty Ballenger late in the race but Ballenger, the current points leader, had to settle for his fifth runner-up finish of the season.
Lambertz talked after the race about how satisfied he’s been with his car. “It’s running really well thanks to Bott Machine,” he said.
Gary Brown Jr., scored the most exciting victory of the night in the Express Copy and Printing Street Stock division. Second row starter Cory Yeigh led the first 14 laps but Brown nipped him at the finish line by two-hundredths of a second. Brown gradually gained ground after starting ninth and swapped lines with Yeigh over the last two laps. It was Brown’s run off the top of turn four that gave him the push he needed to beat Yeigh at the line in a finish that could only be decided by the convenience of electronic scoring. Brown commented that a minor mishandle by Yeigh coming out of turn two on the final lap probably gave him the fraction of a second he needed to take the win.
Tyler Johnson came back from a second lap incident with Jeremy Roozeboom to win his fourth USRA B-Modified feature win. Just as impessive was the second place finish by Johnson’s brother Tracy who had to come from the back of the field after pitting. Tracy Johnson has finished third or better in every race he’s been in at I-90 Speedway this year. He leads the point standings even though he missed a week due to an injury.
Like the Street Stocks, the Hobby Stock feature came down to a last lap pass for the win. Don Brady Jr., led the first 11 laps but got too high in the first turn on the final lap. Mike Chaney, Travis Schreurs and Dustin Gulbrandson raced the final lap in a pack with Brady but it was Chaney who came out on top. Chaney’s win was his second in just three weeks.
Tammy Lingen’s best race of the season turned out to be her first ever win at I-90 Speedway. Lingen was in complete control as she led all 10 laps of the Fast Auto Wash Super Charges A-Main.
Sarah Koep of Hartford used Pam Rose’s Super Charger to win the annual eight lap powder puff race. Wendy Campbell was second and Julissa Reyna was third.
