RYAN BICKETT TAKES SUMMER RUMBLE

i90 | Jul 23, 2012 | Comments 0

by Steve Zwemke
HARTFORD, S.D. –  Ryan Bickett rode the rim of I-90 Speedway to run down John Lambertz on the 16th lap of Saturday night’s 25 lap Summer Rumble for 360 Sprint Cars en route to earning the $1500 winner’s check.  It was the same method Kevin Flowers, who led laps 3-5, used to pass Randy Droescher in the early stages of the event.  Flowers gave way to John Lambertz who found the bottom groove equally good.  Lambertz led for 10 laps before Bickett took over.  Bickett started on the fifth row and later commented about how well his pink car worked both on the top and bottom.  “It’s good to know that we got this thing figured out,” he said.  Points leader Dusty Ballenger had a strong second place finish.  It was his sixth runner-up of the season.
The Express Copy and Printing Late Model Street Stock Feature also had four different leaders, however bad luck took down the first two.  Terry Prouty led the first two laps before spinning.  Kipp De Groot also led two laps before his engine blew on the frontstretch.  That gave the lead to Dan Jensen.  Meanwhile, Craig Hanisch came from the fifth row and rode the cushion with his TDR machine to catch up with Jensen.  Hanisch made the winning pass on lap 11 of the 15 lap A-Main.  It was Hanisch’s third I-90 Speedway win this season and the second in his Street Stock.
Only four times this season has a Johnson brother not ended up in victory lane on Saturday night.  It didn’t happen this week either as Tracy Johnson led the final 11 laps of the USRA B-Modified feature to pick up his third win.  A restart with seven laps to go didn’t help the rest of the field as Johnson quickly distanced himself from his opponents, even with a tire rub.  “It’s pretty ripped up.  I don’t know if we’d have made another lap with it,” said the surprised Johnson victory lane.
Travis Schreurs found victory lane for the fourth time in 2012.  The four-time Hobby Stock champion also found the track to his liking.  “The top was just awesome and it stuck a lot better to the bottom than I thought it would,” said Schreurs.  Derrick Scott finished second bettering his previous feature best of seventh.  Scott also led the first half of the race after starting on the pole.
Laura Ebbesen became the season’s first five-time winner with her Fast Auto Wash Super Chargers win.  She motored past Michael Pechous on the second lap and never looked back.  Ebbesen had finished fourth in each of the last three races.  In discussing her statement-like return to the top she said, “We actually alligned it today!”  Ebbesen’s closest competition in the point standings, Joe Blake, finished second.
Twelve Miniakota Microsprints joined this year’s Summer Rumble.  A couple of long-time area Sprint Car racers dominated the event.  Greg Gunderson started on the front row and led the first 11 laps.  Micah Schliemann impressively tracked him down on the 12th lap and went on to win the 15 lap A-Main.  Gunderson settled for second while Chris Breen finished third.
