HARTFORD, S.D. — A green/white/checker finish turned out to be a good thing for Troy Schreurs on Saturday night as he used the open track to outrace Ryan Bickett to the finish line in the Hard Core Speed Shop 360 Sprint Car feature. Schreurs led all 20 laps but lost his cushion over Bickett when their cars reached slower traffic. Schreurs began the race by running the top of the track but found he needed to change his line when passing slower cars so that he could maintain his lead over Bickett. “The bottom was so good tonight. I needed to be down there as much as I could,” explained Schreurs after telling the crowd he prefers to run the high side. The win was Schreurs’ second of the season. Kaley Gharst raced from 11th to third. Meanwhile, a fourth place finish for John Lambertz allowed him to climb to within 21-points of division leader Dusty Ballenger.
Gary Brown Jr., earned his fifth Express Copy and Printing Late Model Street Stock win. Brown took over on lap five from Jamie Tieszen. He then held off a challenge from Craig Hanisch while leading the last 11 laps. Matt Steuerwald was third followed by Dan Jensen. Tieszen, the pole-sitter, faded to fifth.
Tracy Johnson’s fourth USRA B-Modified win saw him dominate the 15 lap event. It was his second straight win. The talk continues to focus on Johnson’s consistency. “We’ve been able to stay out of the wrecks this year,” said Johnson. The Lake Preston, South Dakota, driver has finished in the top three in all 12 features at I-90 Speedway. Saturday night also marked the fifth time that Johnson and his brother Tyler Johnson have finished first and second with Tracy coming out on top in three of the five “family nights.”
The Hobby Stock A-Main was decided in tech which turned out to be unfortunate for Brad Hallem. Hallem left the track with a special five foot tall trophy provided by flagman Chuck Hanisch, but his car was found to have an illegal intake after the race. Hallem’s disqualification handed the win to Tim Waltner who gave Hallem all he could handle in the feature. The win was the first for Waltner since opening night. Mike Chaney’s second place finish was impressive as he came from 10th.
Harley Bauman, the 2011 Fast Auto Wash Super Chargers track champion, left I-90 Speedway with a win. Bauman has run a limited schedule this year. Bauman, who is preparing to leave for college, only entered four events this summer – winning two. She led the final three laps on Saturday and then announced it was her last race in the red, white and blue Super Charger.
