HARTFORD, SD — After watching Justin Jacobsma and Dale Furby trade the lead, Troy Schreurs used the high side to fly past the early leaders en route to his first Hard Core Speed Shop 360 Sprint Car win of the season. With rain approaching, a four-car gathering stopped the race on the third lap. After a quick clean up Jacobsma regained the lead from Furby, but only for two laps. Schreurs, who started in the third row, then made his move and held of Robby Wolfgang and Ryan Bickett over the final laps. Bickett was certainly within striking distance, however an already slick track, backmarkers and the first few raindrops of a major storm system may have prevented Bickett from stealing the lead away.
The Schreurs camp was already in a good mood before Troy’s win because his brother Travis Schreurs continued his impressive start to the 2013 season with his third Express Copy and Printing Late Model Street Stock A-Main trophy. Schreurs slowly reeled in Craig Hanisch over the first 10 laps before passing him on the outside with five to go. “If the top’s open I’m gonna take it,” stated Schreurs in victory lane. Hanisch took second and Cory Yeigh gained four spots to finish third.
The 19 car USRA B-Modified main event saw three different leaders. Pole sitter Don Brady, Jr. led the first five laps but slid up the track in turn two of the sixth circuit. Marty Myers jumped all over the opportunity to lead his first lap of the season. However, a spin by Doug Wallis created a restart with eight to go. Brock Hess wasted little time in passing Myers after the restart and led the rest of the way for his second win. Jeremiah Christensen also got around Myers at the end of the race to finish second. Myers was third followed by Craig Hanisch.
The first month of the season has already provided Hobby Stock fans with some good racing between Zach Olivier and Tim Waltner. Waltner had the faster car this week. Though Waltner passed Olivier for the lead, he said, “I figured he was on my tail so I drove as hard as I could.” Olivier had taken the point from Mike Chaney on the second lap. Waltner’s win was the 25th of his career at I-90 Speedway.
Justin Peterson was able to maintain the top spot in the Fast Auto Wash Super Chargers point standings. Provisional driver Rick Egan raced to the checkered flag in Peterson’s car after leading the final five laps. Josh Lien led the first five but dropped out to finish ninth. Laura Ebbesen, who also performed the National Anthem, was runner-up.
The Central Vintage Racing Association brought in 14 classic Super Modifieds, Modified Stock Cars and Vintage Stock Cars. They ran two features with Austin Russell of Dunkerton, Iowa, winning the Super Modified A-Main. Bob Ryan of Fremont, Nebraska, edged Jack Larson of Afton, Iowa, in the Modified Stock Car Feature. James Coon of Holly Springs, Iowa, had the top running Vintage Stock.
