HARTFORD, SD — Eric Lutz may want to make more frequent visits to I-90 Speedway after winning the Hard Core Speed Shop 360 Sprint Car A-Main Saturday night. The Sioux Falls driver has ended up in victory lane in each of his last two appearances at the Hartford track. Jason Eckard looked like he would be tough to beat early in the race. Eckard, who started on pole position, led the first five laps. Troy Schreurs made a couple of aggressive passes on the sixth lap, storming past Lutz and Eckard, to take the lead. Schreurs led the next seven laps until backmarker Matt Ziebarth made contact with him in turn one. Damage to Schreurs car made it impossible for him to continue – handing the lead to Lutz. Lutz was in control for the remaining laps of the 20 lap feature as Ryan Bickett moved up to finish second. Joe Riedel was third followed by John Lambertz and Eckard.
Lutz talked about the patience that was required to score the win. “If you can get through one and two at this place a guy can really get good,” said Lutz. He also expressed empathy for Schreurs who had to retire from the event.
Brian Hoing led all 12 laps of the Hobby Stock feature while Zach Olivier hounded him for the entire race. Hoing started second and stuck to his line. He gave Olivier plenty of room to run on the bottom and apparently never worried about blocking the three-time winner. The win was Hoing’s first career victory at I-90 Speedway and couldn’t have been more exciting for the Kimball driver. “The was great. I don’t know how to describe it,” said Hoing. Olivier’s second place finish allowed him to retake the points lead from Dustin Gulbrandson by 25 points.
Craig Hanisch ran a stout race in the Express Copy and Printing Late Model Street Stock feature. Hanisch passed Kevin Larson on the fourth lap and destroyed the rest of the field in earning his first feature win of 2013. Hanisch has been absent from his B-Modified the last few weeks and explained, “We had to get one figured out before we get back on the other.” He assured fans he will do some more B-Mod racing at some point this season.
Tim Dann got well just one night after getting caught up in a red flag incident Friday night at Rapid Speedway. Dann got by Jared Nytroe half way through the USRA B-Modified A-Main. It was Dann’s first I-90 Speedway win since May of 2012. More important, the win allowed Dann to break a tie atop the point standings with Dave Kennedy. Only two points separated Dann, Kennedy and Marty Myers entering the evening. Dann came out of the night leading Kennedy by 22 points and Myers by 44. Dudley Schroeder, Jr. crossed the finish line in second. It was his fifth Top 5 finish. Dennis Martin gained eight positions to finish third.
Jutin Voeltz became the Fast Auto Wash Super Chargers division’s first three-time winner of 2013. Voeltz grabbed the lead from Justin Peterson and led the last eight laps for his second win in a row. Peterson still leads the division by 30 points over Voeltz.
