HARTFORD, SD — An intense thunderstorm with hail played a big role in I-90 Speedway’s Saturday night racing schedule, but it didn’t put a damper on Zach Olivier’s night as he won his second straight Hobby Stock feature. The 12 lap feature was cautioned after the third lap when moderate rain began to fall. The Hobby Stocks stayed on the track and, with help from the Late Model Street Stocks, worked the track back into racing condition. And what a track it was. Don Brady Jr., led the majority of the race until Dylan Fitzpatrick snuck by him coming out of the second turn on the white flag lap. Before the lap was complete, Olivier, who had restarted third, got by both Brady and Fitzpatrick in one of the most exciting finishes of the season. Fitzpatrick was second. Derrick Scott also passed Brady on the final lap to finish third. Olivier’s fifth win of 2013 allowed him to take another step in the direction of the Hobby Stock track title. He leads Dustin Gulbrandson by 49 points going into Saturday’s season championships.
The Express Copy and Printing Late Model Street Stocks were only able to get six laps into their feature before the rain picked back up and turned into a full-fledged thunderstorm with hail, ending the night’s racing card.
The only other feature to run was the Fast Auto Wash Super Chargers A-Main. Josh Downs led all 10 laps for his first trip to victory lane since 2006. “Today at two we weren’t going to race. My dad called and said, ‘Let’s try one more thing,’ and here we are!” said Downs. Downs explained the car was not turning RPM’s, a problem which dated back to the previous week. Meanwhile, Justin Peterson scored a second place finish to give him a 71 point cushion atop the point standings.
Season Championship night will be a “can’t miss” event as I-90 Speedway will now have double features in the Hard Core Speed Shop 360 Sprint Car division as well as in the Express Copy and Printing Late Model Street Stock and USRA B-Modified divisions. In addition, The Coffee Cup Street Stock Challenge will be made up. The Street Stock Challenge will be run in a trio of seven lap segments with stops for a two-tire change and fuel and also a field realignment. It’s presented by the Coffee Cup Fuel Stops, Bolte’s Sunrise Sanitation Service, Cellular Only of Sioux Falls, Furby’s Auto Repair and N-Rich Plant Food in Humboldt.
