(HARTFORD, S.D.) Current United States Modified Touring Series national points leader Rodney Sanders concluded a successful week on the USMTS Casey’s Cup Powered by Swan Energy Farm Boy BBQ Sauce Northern Region tour with a win Saturday night at I-90 Speedway. Sanders, of Happy, Texas led the final 23 laps of the 40 lap A-Main in the first ever appearance by the USMTS at I-90 Speedway. Ham Lake, Minnesota driver Jeremy Houle, a USMTS Rookie of the Year candidate, was fast throughout the night. After winning his heat he led the first nine laps of the feature until a wreck took four cars out of the field. On the restart, Johnny Scott of Las Cruces, New Mexico bolted past Houle for the lead. Houle would later be sent to the rear of the field after a spin, but he apparently found I-90 Speedway to his liking as he raced back up to a third place finish. He later joked, “I stepped on it with both feet.” Sanders grabbed the lead from Scott on lap 18 but Scott charged back to Sanders’ outside a couple laps later when a “racing incident” ended up with Scott spinning in turn one and expressing his frustration with Sanders. Sanders then held off a hard charging Jon Tesch of Watertown, South Dakota at the end of the race for his third USMTS win of the week (the others coming at Hancock County Speedway and Fairmont Raceway). Sanders’ win paid $2000 and he ended up with earnings of $9000 during the four-day Farm Boy BBQ Sauce Northern Region swing.
A great field of 32 cars entered the USRA Iron Man Challenge for B-Modifieds with drivers coming from Kansas, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and South Dakota. Tyler Johnson of Montrose, South Dakota led the first two laps of the 20 lap feature. But then it became the Corey Crapser show. Crapser, of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, outraced the field over the final 18 laps to earn the Iron Man Challenge Race win for the second straight night for the $600 winner’s check. Former I-90 Speedway track champion Cody Ahrendt, in just the second night in his new car, passed 13 cars for an impressive third place finish. I-90 Speedway regular Devon Schlumbohm was equally impressive in taking fourth ahead of Jared Timmerman of Des Moine, Iowa.
The USRA Hobby Stocks also raced with 17 cars in the field. Dustin Gulbrandson took the lead from Brian Campbell after two laps and led the rest of the way. Chad Lonneman and Mike Chaney ran second and third respectively for most of the race. They would finish behind Gulbrandson in those positions. It was Gulbrandson’s first win of the season at I-90 Speedway. Gulbrandson said, “I wanted to run the bottom but it was too rough. There was a little moisture up so I put it up top.”
The racing season continues this Saturday night with action in all five divisions of the Paramount Racing Series. The Coffee Cup Fuel Stops 360 Sprint Cars, Express Copy and Printing Late Model Street Stocks and Fast Auto Wash Super Chargers will all be back in action. Hot laps are at 6:30 p.m. Racing follows at 7:00.
