(HARTFORD, S.D.) — Late rain showers during Saturday night’s races at I-90 Speedway means added excitement over the next two weeks. More on that later.
First, Dave Kennedy raced to his first USRA B-Modified win since April. It took Kennedy four laps to pass front row starter Doug Wallis for the lead (Kennedy started fourth). Kennedy had a comfortable lead until a caution on the white flag lap for a minor incident in turn two. Dennis Martin, whose car was extensively damaged a week ago, came from eighth. He pressured Kennedy over the green/white/checker finish but it was not enough to prevent Kennedy from earning his third win of the season. Pole sitter Tyler Tesch finished behind Martin in third.
It was a perfect night for Mike Chaney to win his fourth USRA Hobby Stock A-Main. With one of his car sponsors, Schoeneman’s Building Materials Center, sponsoring the night’s races, Chaney had no problem leading all 12 laps of the feature. Chaney’s closest competitor, Jason Bradley, ran second every lap. Dustin Gulbrandson – third – grabbed his 11th top five finish. Zach Olivier – fourth – now has 10 top fives.
Michalob Voeltz continues to impress during his debut season in the Fast Auto Wash Super Chargers class. After a heat win, Voeltz put it in cruise control to lead all 10 laps in the feature. Points leader Chad Carpenter was a distant second.
Rain came down during the Express Copy and Printing Late Model Street Stock feature. It became heavier during the race which was suspended with four laps remaining. It was a lucky break for Gary Brown Jr. The Brandon, South Dakota driver is in a close points battle with Travis Schreurs. Brown had to tag the rear of the field after the center of his right rear wheel broke. The race will be totally restarted next Saturday which means double features in the Late Model Street Stock division.
The rain also washed out the evening’s Coffee Cup Fuel Stops 360 Sprint Car feature. Fans can look forward to double Sprint Car features on August 16.
Coca-Cola sponsors next Saturday night’s races. Kids 18 and under will receive FREE admission and a FREE hot dog and Coke! The Arby’s Late Model Challenge marks the return of Late Models to I-90 Speedway for the first time in four years. The Arby’s Late Model Challenge pays $750 to win and $200 to start. And, again, there are double features for Late Model Street Stocks along with USRA B-Modifieds, USRA Hobby Stocks and Super Chargers in one huge night of racing. Hot laps begin at 6:30 p.m. with racing at 7:00. For more information, log onto www.i90Speedway.com, see I-90 Speedway’s Facebook page and follow on Twitter @racei90.
