Two drivers end years-long win droughts Saturday at I-90 Speedway

Elliot Amdahl would end Saturday night’s competition at I-90 Speedway in the winners’ circle following the Spielman Excavating IMCA Sprint Car feature. However, the story of the night came earlier in the evening when two drivers went back to the W column for the first time in many years.

The feature events started with Travis VanDenTop leading all 12 laps of the LawnSnow.com USRA Hobby Stock feature. For the Rock Rapids, Iowa, driver, it was his second ever win at I-90 Speedway, but first time taking the trophy since July 19, 2014.

In the following feature event, Ray Feltman scored the win – the first for him since July 28, 2001. Feltman’s win in the USRA B-Modified feature was his first in the class and career win 13 at the speedway.

Amdahl’s victory came with a late race pass in which he became the fourth different leader in the sprint car feature. Nate Barger was out front for three laps; Alec Mataya was on point for five laps and Micah Slendy led the open two circuits.

At the checkered, Amdahl got win number six of his career at the speedway. Casey Abbas drove from tenth to second ahead of Mataya, Barger and Lee Goos, Jr.

Passing was the name of the game in the T&R Contracting Late Model Street Stock feature. Zach Oliver took the win, but it wasn’t easy. The Sioux Falls driver of car #71 started seventeenth on the grid and took the lead on lap 17. Dustin Gulbrandson led the first 16 laps and placed second ahead of Billy Prouty. Cory Yeigh was fourth with Ron Howe completing the top five.

Behind Feltman’s win in the B-Modifieds, Miah Christensen raced from tenth to second; Brock Hess charged from position 12 to third and Dustin Kruse from eleventh to fourth. Corbin Erickson completed the top five.

In the hobby stock feature, Levi VanderWeide got his second consecutive second place finish – this time behind VanDenTop. Jason Bradley, Nick Brady and Cadyn Wessels finished with top five honors.

I-90 Speedway races again this coming Saturday night. Drivers take to the speedway for practice at 6:30 with racing starting about 30 minutes later.
